Civil Status certificates

Birth certificates
Birth certificates are for those born in Monaco and Monaco nationals who, though born abroad, are registered in the municipal records of Monaco’s City Hall.

Marriage certificates

Marriage certificates are for those who have been married in Monaco and Monaco nationals who, though married abroad, have had their birth certificates validated in the Principality and are registered in the municipal records of Monaco’s City Hall.

They concern deaths that have taken place in Monaco.

Records of civil status
Civil status certificates, both individual and family certificates, are delivered only to Monaco residents upon production of the family record book or of a birth certificate extract.

Life certificates

They are issued solely to residents of the Principality. They are required by state pension funds, in particular.

Certificates of inheritance
These are issued if the deceased was or one of his heirs is domiciled in Monaco. In order to obtain a certificate, heirs must produce a document of identity as well as the family record book(s) of the deceased.

Signature authentifications

This is an administrative procedure that consists in notarising a signature and the status of the signatory with an official countersignature.

Certified copies

To obtain a certified copy of a document one must come in person and produce both the original and a photocopy of the document that is either written in French or translated by a certified translator.

Divorce transcription certificates
An immediate issuance of this document, regarding all divorce judgments pronounced by Monaco’s District Court, may be requested upon presentation of a proof of identity.

Family record book duplicates
The family record book is issued on the day of one’s wedding by the Marriage Registrar at the conclusion of the ceremony.

A duplicate document may be issued upon production of a proof of identity: 
- In case of loss or theft: come in person with a police statement; 
- Following a divorce.

Monaco National Identity Cards
Enacted by Sovereign Ordinance n° 2.108 dated March19th 2009, the new electronic cards are issued to all Monegasque citizens regardless of age, upon request.

Certificates of citizenship, residence and custom

These documents, costing 0.50 € each, may be requested either by phone or via internet (the request form can be downloaded from the forms menu).

Citizenship acquisition

Monaco’s citizenship is acquired by lineage, by declaration or by naturalization. All Monegasque citizens are automatically registered in accordance with Sovereign Ordinance n° 2.194 dated May 12th 2009.
