1 birth = 1 tree
The Municipal Council adopted this plan in 2008. This reforestation programme is a tangible testimony to the Town Hall’s commitment towards reforestation and the environment.
Its functioning is quite simple. For every child birth recorded in the Principality, Monaco’s Municipality commits to planting a tree in Monaco’s immediate surroundings (Cap d'Ail, La Turbie...). When parents come to Town Hall to declare their child’s birth, they are delivered a tree certificate in the child’s name by Municipal Registry services.
Hence, every spring, as many trees as births that have taken place during the preceding year are planted in conjunction with France’s National Forestry Commission and the adjoining cities.
The 1 birth = 1 tree programme is recognised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and is part of « Plant for the Planet », sponsored by HSH Prince Albert II, whose aim is to plant a billion trees worldwide.
Consequently, over 5,000 trees have been planted by Monaco’s Municipality in surrounding areas since 2008.
